The design is for a church in a small community of Masterton, North Island, New Zealand (population of 23,500)
The building form is created via the fusion of 2 traditions: one being the cruciform plan, with reference back to the traditional churches of the Gothic era, and secondly the abstraction of the "Marae" building form, being the main ceremonial "town hall" of the Maoris community.
The single storey height entrance lobby takes the roof form of a Marae, and transforms into a triple volume sanctuary at the end. The junction of the cruciform is transformed into a sunlit fellowship court, reflecting the social significance of the church community as well as the traditional function of the Marae as a town hall.
