MFS Large Child Care Centre @ Punggol Drive
My First Skool (MFS) Large Child Care Center (LCCC) at Punggol is sited on a 10,000sqm plot at the junction of Punggol Drive and Punggol Place. This LCCC will be one of the first large childcare centres catering for early learning of 1000 infants and children from ages 0-4 years old.
With a LRT viaduct cutting across one corner of the site, the 3-storey building consists of 2 triangular-lozenge-shaped pods connected by a centre thoroughfare. Each pod features a high-volume piazza space sheltered by tensile membrane roofs. The piazzas with generous indoor landscape areas, enclosed by ramps and louvered glass façades, form the elegant entrance feature when approached from either side of the building. The ramps around the two piazzas facilitate movement of very young children through all three levels of the centre.
The design aims to provide an environment for learning and growing through play and interaction – one that is highly naturalistic to enhance the children’s sensorial and relational experiences. The centre is provided with pockets of landscape that contain a wide variety of play opportunities under both indoor and outdoor conditions. We envision the landscape areas to be an exploratory play area for the children, where they can have a chance to encounter “nature” and learn about herbs, shrubs and trees in a protected environment.
